I have always been a fan of Mel Gibson, but I particularly enjoy his older films which seem to be less serious and more comedy /action based. Bird On A Wire is one of those films that may be extremely corny but it's a blast to watch.
Mel Gibson is Rick Jarmin, thought by his fiancée to be dead for over 15 years, but what a surprise it is when Marianne Graves (Goldie Hawn) stumbles across Rick working at a mechanic stop. Rick's been apart of the FBI's relocation program after he helped to put a notorious drug lord, Eugene Sorenson, in prison. Now the crook is out and Rick is his #1 target, his cover is blown by a corrupt FBI agent who informs Sorenson of Rick's location. Now Rick is running for his life and having to keep an eye on Marianne whose now been singled out by the FBI and Sorenson as well.
Bird On A Wire is similar to Romancing The Stone, another corny but fun action /comedy which manages to not take itself seriously, yet still be quite entertaining. It's been a long time since I last saw this film, and I enjoyed it a lot, Gibson is hilarious, Hawn is tolerable and most importantly is the film flows extremely well with never a dull moment. It may not be classic cinema but it's definitely a fun film worth checking out on a long hot summer day.
8/10
This was when Mel Gibson was doing super heavy films like Hamlet, Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ or Apocalypto. Its interesting to see how he has evolved both as an actor and as a filmmaker. I when he was making films like Bird on a Wire, it was when he was famous as the action/adventure guy because of his involvment in films like Mad Max and Lethal Weapon. Now he is something completely different.
ReplyDeleteI remember this movie from my teen-hood :) It was quite popular here in Serbia. But I must admit I was a bigger fan of "Romancing The Stone" movies, "Gremlins", "Back to Future", "The Goonies", "Working Girl" ....
ReplyDeleteYea, this is definitely more of a less popular adventure / action film. Underrated you could say, still fun though.
