1001+ Movies You Must See Before You Die Club

NEW INFORMATION!
I'm happy to announce a pretty good show of support, so far we have 7 people joined up and one of the members said their girlfriend would be joining in so that would make it 8. To keep you all updated a blog has been setup and will be used to display all future announcements, updates, film selections and overall film scores. So it might be wise to add that blog to your follow list so you can stay up with the updates.

OLD INFORMATION
So I came across this book from a fellow movie fans site Flimsquish whose taken it upon himself to watch and review all the films listed in the book. I thought that was a cool idea, so I quickly ordered the book online for a few bucks (you can get it for about $5 plus shipping) and decided I would set out on a similar journey. But the thought just occurred to me, how much more fun would this be if it was turned into almost like a book club format? Meaning each week or every couple weeks a group of us picked one film from the list, watched it and reviewed it, I'd even be willing to post a link to everyone's review on my own site. I think that would be fun, if anyone would like to join in please post so. Then in about a week when we have a few people I'll post the list and we can get started. Also post your recommendation on how often we ought to review a film. And please spread the word, the more the merrier!

  2. Definitely in, but given that I netflick these films... it might make it hard to get the film in on time... but I'm definitely 100% into more community involvement!

Maybe we could, for difficult titles pick a year instead? This is the week of 1932!.. for example

  4. Squish,

What's your usual turnaround on Netflix? Would like a week be too short of time, what about two weeks to get and review a film.

I guess this question would apply to anyone using Netflix or Blockbuster Online.

I like the year idea, we could definitely switch it up a lot, even just limit the selection of the chosen film that time to a particular year.

  5. I'd think for rental folks, having maybe a "this month's club reviews" and include 4 films? or for "the next six weeks it's 1986 for the 1001 picks."
That way people who put 4 at the top of their lists and get just one can still participate... When I prepare for a Club film or a 'Thon i usually write my review long ahead of time and just post on the day of, but we usually get a 3-4 weeks notice, which gives the nextflix time to ship a dozen films to me, hopefully receiving the one I need in that time.

Either way, do it the way you want and see if adjustment is required. I'd also suggest doing it for easily accessible films and ones that aren't known to be terrible. Did you know Clueless was on the list? Yeah.

  6. All good ideas. I'm thinking just starting simple first and then build our way up. So we'll have one person pick a film that everyone can get and give everyone one a couple weeks to review it. If everyone has it done before the couple weeks we can start another, if not you'll still be able to submit your review later on and it will be included in the group score. In fact any new members could submit reviews for any old films we've already reviewed and they would be included.

I like your ideas, I just don't want to get too complicated right off the bat.

  9. I live in Korea ATM, so I won't be renting them. It is pretty easy to get my hands on them though. Just for the record, if we did one movie every week it would take almost than 20 years to finish ;p I'm OK with this (Especially since we've already seen some of the movies), and it would be awfully difficult to cut it down to any shorter amount of time.

I've seen the list and it's not always about the movies being "good", but more about them being important or representative of an era. There are some silly ones on there, but I kind of look forward to those sicne they will break up the monotony of "quality" films.

On a side note, how do you want to arrange this? Are we just going to link to each others blogs, or are we going to create a extra blog? It might be a good idea to create one for the project where we can place the scores and links to everyone participating.

Consider my signing up as 2 people since I think the girlfriend and I will each review the movies.

That is the blog I will be using for the project. I need to spruce it up a little, but it will do for now. Also, ignore the comment I made about setting up the blog for it. I found it just after I posted.

  17. I completely love the idea and would totally be up for it. I own the book (although I think mine is an older edition) and have been very VERY slowly making my way through it, but'd be way more fun (and more motivating) if I was blogging along with other people
