Bond Secret File #13 - Octopussy

Introduction: 6/10
Octopussy
has a rather descent introduction to the film with Bond going undercover to plant a bomb on a jet in what looks to be a Cuban military base. In the course of this he is discovered and makes a getaway in an awesome mini jet that he has secretly located. It's an entertaining opening but has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the film.

Title Song: 3/10
For a film that is pretty awful the title song and the sequence works well, it's no where near the quality of what a Bond theme song or title sequence should be.
All Time High is sung by Rita Coolidge, and would have made a good 60's sitcom theme song but is no where near an "all time high" in terms of the Bond theme songs; in fact it only helps to solidify Octopussy as "an all time low" in the Bond franchise.

All I wanted was a sweet distraction for an hour or two. Had no intention to do the things we've done. Funny how it always goes with love, when you don't look, you find. But then we're two of a kind, we move as one.

We're an all time high, we'll change all that's gone before. Doing so much more than falling in love. On an all time high, we'll take on the world that way. So hold on tight, let the flight begin.

I don't want to waste a waking moment I don't want to sleep. I'm in so strong and so deep, and so are you. In my time I’ve said these words before, but now I realize, my heart was telling me lies, for you they're true.

We're an all time high, we'll change all that's gone before. Doing so much more than falling in love. On an all time high, we'll take on the world that way. So hold on tight, let the flight begin. So hold on tight, let the flight begin, we're an all time high.

Bond: 4/10
Roger Moore hit's "an all time low" in this poor edition to the Bond franchise. If one thought Moore couldn't possibly take Bond to a cornier level then watch out! Bond dressing up as a clown in the closing segments of the film is sure to be one of the low points in the Bond franchise. One could claim it's the writers fault, but aren't they writing these films to fit Moore's style of Bond, which has seemed to turn into huge joke?

Main Bond Girl
:
Octopussy: 3/10
The main Bond girl and also the title of the film, Octopussy is the leader of a worldwide jewelry smuggling operation that uses the octopus as their signal. She was named Octopussy by her father, who originally started the organization that his daughter would later revive. As it turns out Bond had actually known her father 20 years ago when he was sent to retrieve him and bring him back for a court marshal, instead Bond allowed her father to commit suicide rather than facing the murder and theft charges that awaited him. Octopussy is played by Maud Adams, her second appearance in a Bond film and as a Bond girl; she makes a third appearance in the next Bond film,
A View To Kill. Keeping in line with the consistency of the film Octopussy is easily one of the worst Bond Girls of the franchise, which is quite clear by her horrible lines and immature attitude. Her character is so easily manipulated and blah that it's quite pitiful to watch.

Magda: 3/10
A minor Bond girl in the film who doesn't offer much more than Octopussy does. She is apart of Octopussy's band of females and has a blander personality than Octopussy. Also something quite strange about both Bond girls is they both look incredibly old compared to past ones. Maybe this is due to the fact that Bond is in his 60's.

The Villains
:
Kamal Khan: 4/10
An exiled Afghan Prince Khan enjoys cheating others in gambling with the use of loaded dice, he's the right hand man of Octopussy's clan of smugglers yet is secretly plotting against her and is using his position to help progress the evil plot of General Orlov. Like many other Bond films
Octopussy is loaded down with a vast number of lesser villains that only become obstacles in the film, nothing more. Khan has the most screen time out of them all but he's truly a sub-par Bond villain.

General Orlov: 3/10
It's his idea to place a bomb on a US Air Force base and ignite a world war. Yet General Orlov is in the film for a combined time of five minutes, no where near the amount of time that a villain who is in control of the film's evil plot should have, another huge mistake made by the writers.

Total Rating : 4.3/10
