Water's Edge (2003)

Beginning my Emmanuelle Vaugier fix I checked out the low budget thriller entitled Water's Edge. Starring Nathan Fillion in what appears to be his second role prior to Firefly, in a film with Daniel Baldwin one of the many unknown Baldwin boys. To my surprise Water's Edge turned out to be quite an interesting little film, nothing spectacular mind you but worth watching if you're looking for something a little different than mainstream cinema.

Robert and his wife are trying to escape the busy city life and put past tragedy behind then by moving back to Robert's small country home town. With his father having recently passed away the couple setup their new life in his once inhabited hunting cabin, located miles into the wilderness, but even the wilderness has its dangers. Robert mistakenly stumbles upon the town’s sheriff about to smash a rock over the skull of a handcuffed woman. Unsure of what to do Robert leaps into action in hopes of saving this woman's life. But the sheriff isn't to keen on negotiation and Robert is forced to kill him, setting in motion a series of events that make their lives more miserable than he ever dreamed possible.

In an attempt to cover up the scene Robert discovers $200,000 in cash stashed away in the sheriff's car and later discovers a corpse in his trunk. Robert puts two and two together and knows something’s not quite right with this whole picture, especially when the story the girl gives him doesn't seen to explain everything, especially the money. With two dead bodies likely to be discovered soon, a battered woman and two hundred grand Robert must decide how they're going to get out of town alive before they get deeper into the town's dirty little secrets!

Water's Edge turns out to be a descent little film which managed to hold my interest on story alone. The acting is mediocre and the ending predictable but the first half of the film, where everything starts to unravel, was quite entertaining. I'm not a big Fillion fan but for his second role he did a descent job. Emmanuelle was hot as usual, even when she was beat looking, and you can't ask for much more out of a film when you get a nice chick fight between her and Chandra West (Robert's wife). In the end, it's a good low budget thriller worth a watch if you ever get a chance to, if you've seen and enjoyed Safe House, another Showtime type film, then you'll probably enjoy this one as well.

7/10

  1. It's interesting how I've never watched anything with Nathan Fillion besides FIREFLY although I really like the guy!

  2. I watched it for Vaugier, but Fillion's not bad either. I'm not really a fanboy of his, as many others appear to be.

  3. Never appears to have been released over here. Shame, sounds reasonably interesting.
