Action of the Tiger (1957)

Five years before the worldwide success of the James Bond franchise Sean Connery and famed Bond director Terence Young worked together on a little known project entitled Action of the TigerAction of the Tiger is a meger action picture centering around an American smuggler named Carson (Van Johnson) and a French woman by the name of Tracy (Martine Carol) who hires him to take her into communist occupied Albania to rescue her captured brother.  Sean Connery plays very small role as Carson's right hand man, Mike, a complete drunk, and the familiar face of Herbert Lorn from a previous Connery siting in Hell Drivers plays the film's most interesting character Trifon.

Action of the Tiger is another obscure Connery film I'd be curious to know if anyone else has ever heard of.  While it's at least interesting to watch a completely forgotten film unfortunately unlike the two prior films that briefly featured Connery there is nothing here that makes this one worth watching when Connery's not on screen.  The acting is typical 1950's over-the-top melodrama, the action sequences are weak, the characters are extremely one dimensional and the story itself is pretty uninteresting and even at times boring.  For me this film was only worth a few past and present tie in's to Connery's career, that being Herbert Lorn who play the most interesting and entertaining character in this film and also did a fine job in Hell Drivers, and the fact that this low quality action film was the first collaboration between a wet nosed Connery and establishing director Terence Young.  Both would be experiencing incredible career expansions in a few years with the Bond series.

4/10

  1. Never heard of this one, but it does sound like a mildly interesting 50's action-comedy. Granted I'm not too keen on Van Johnson, and the plot seems rather bland. Probably going to accept your 4/10 as a likely judge, and just stay away for the time being.

  2. @Univarn - it's actually not supposed to be a comedy, supposed to be an action / drama. If it looks like a comedy that's purely unintentional, it's definitely not funny.
