My Bloody Valentine (2009)

What's possibly worse than a slasher film? How about a low budget slasher film, with horrible CGI, unbearable acting and 3D as a gimmick used to to suck people into the theaters! That's the case with My Bloody Valentine, which helped to reiterate why I don't care for slasher films, and making me appreciate the mediocre styles of Friday the 13th even more.

After giving Friday the 13th a try, starring Jared Padalecki, I figured I give his Supernatural co-star Jensen Ackles' film a shot. My Bloody Valentine starts out chronicling the Valentine's night massacre in which a miner awakes from a coma and slaughters 22 people. Fast forward ten years later and Tom Hanniger (Jensen Ackles) has returned to his hometown which he had left following the murders. With his father recently deceased Tom has returned to sell off the mine which his father had owned, the mine which held nothing but horrific memories for him. His return coincides with the anniversary of the Valentine's killings, something that appears to be coincidental, until the killings begin happening again. Locals believe it to be the return of Harry Warden who was responsible for the original killings, but the sheriff has his eyes on Tom Hanniger even though he always seems to have a pretty tight alibi and the trust of his wife Sarah, Tom's former girlfriend.

From the beginning it's blatantly obvious how low budget this film is, just the look and feel screams Sci-Fi Channel original. Half the time the CGI is so mediocre that it ruins the "realism" of the film and makes it more corny than scary. The acting is so below sub par even for a slasher film, Ackles is awesome on Supernatural, but here he's pathetic which proves it's hard to do much with a horrible script. The film also drags quite a bit, which really has a lot to do with the horrible story and ridiculous acting. Overall, after watching My Bloody Valentine I have a new appreciation for Friday the 13th, a film which excels in about everything compared to this. The only one up My Bloody Valentine has is it does manage to keep you guessing has to who the killer might be, it's the only reason I bothered watching the entire thing. But in the end even that's not worth wasting your time, the ending ends up being so cookie cutter it's a little annoying.
