Moonraker has by far the best introduction sequence of any Bond film at this point in the franchise. The scene consists of Bond being pushed out of an airplane that is in-flight, having no parachute Bond fights another jumper in midair and steals his parachute.
Title Song: 9/10
Finally a good Bond title song, after some continuous pieces of crap Moonraker breaks a rather sad streak with the return of Shirley Bassey (of the Goldfinger theme) who offers up another great Bond song:
Where are you? Why do you hide? Where is that moonlight trail that leads to your side? Just like the Moonraker goes in search of his dream of gold, I search for love, for someone to have and hold,
I've seen your smile in a thousand dreams, felt your touch and it always seems, you love me, you love me.
Where are you? When will we meet? Take my unfinished life and make it complete. Just like the Moonraker knows his dream will come true someday, I know that you are only a kiss away,
I've seen your smile in a thousand dreams, felt your touch and it always seems, you love me, you love me.
Bond: 9/10
Moore continues to impress me as the films get better and better. He's still no match for Sean Connery in my book, but he gives a worthy performance that is about as good as this Bond is going to get. One of my favorite scenes is when he is strapped into the G-Force machine, which spins him around at super speeds. In an attempt to kill him, one of Drax's men cranks it up full blast. The expression on Bond's face during and after that "ride" is priceless!
Main Bond Girls:
Corinne Dufour: 8/10
One of Hugo Drax's pilots, Corinne meets Bond when she picks him up to take him to the Drax estate. She is later seduced by Bond and gives him the location of some secret documents. Later in the film she pays the price for helping him, which turns out to be a very well shot and dramatic scene for a Bond film. While she's only in the beginning of the film her role was large enough in my opinion to warrant some attention.
Dr. Holly Goodhead: 10/10
Bond meets Holly during his tour of the Drax residence and Moonraker complex. Holly is an undercover CIA agent and trained astronaut who is posing as one of Drax's lead scientists. Bond later discovers her true identity and the two eventually partner up to stop Drax from destroying all human life on Earth. I found Holly Goodhead to be one of the better Bond girls in the franchise so far. She reminded me a lot of Pussy Galore, not just because of the rather risqué name, but because she happens to be extremely gorgeous as well as intelligent and helpful, where most of the Bond girls turn out to be ditsy poster girls for Sweet Valley High. She has confidence and she has a little bit of an attitude as well, I thought the character was portrayed very well and is one of my favorite Bond girls.
The Villains:
Hugo Drax: 8/10
Drax is by no means the worst Bond villain, but neither is he the best. He has a menacing look and feel to him but he also comes off as extremely boring and bland. Drax is another Bond villain whose evil plan entails killing off the entire population of Earth and starting over creating a "better" world. This theme is quickly becoming old especially after it was the main goal of the villain in the previous film, but Drax still manages to be a rather decent villain and had some of the "good" qualities that every menacing villain must have.
Jaws: 9/10
Brought back by popular demand, Jaws is hired by Drax after Bond kills his previous henchman. This time around Jaws seems to be a little more of a well rounded character, where in the last film he acted like a giant vampire trying to take a chunk out of everyone's neck. Logically he shouldn't even be alive after all the things that were thrown his way in the last film but he makes a triumph return. In this film we see a softer side of Jaws near the end of the film when his realizes what Drax is capable of and decides to become an alley of Bond.
