Bond Secret File #14 - A View To A Kill

Introduction: 5/10
I don't know what is more unbelievable... a boat that looks like an iceberg or 60 year old Roger Moore skiing and snowboarding down the side of a shear cliff! While Bond films are known for some unbelievable action sequences and chase scenes it begins to get a little more ridiculous when the writers attempt to make believe Moore (Bond) is capable of doing these things at his age! What really ruined the introduction for me was the insertion of a Beach Boys song while Bond is attempting to escape some attackers, I get the parallel of the song to the location of California later in the film but it's still is extremely corny.

Title Song: 5/10
I did think the title sequence was a little corny in terms of all the florescent colors and the lasers coming out of the guns...a little cheesy.  The theme song is your typical 80's song with a slight Bond twist to it.  At first I really hated it, but it's actually grown on me after a while, while still rather sub par for a Bond song it's far from the worst in the franchise.   The title theme song is performed by Duran Duran (which always reminds me of Barbarella).

Meeting you with a view to a kill. Face to faces, secret places, feel the chill.

Night fall covers me, but you know the plans I'm making. Still oversee, could it be the whole earth opening wide? A sacred why. A mystery gaping inside. The week is why?

Until we dance into the fire, that fatal kiss is all we need. Dance into the fire. To fatal sounds of broken dreams. Dance into the fire. That fatal kiss is all we need. Dance into the fire.

The choice for you is the view to a kill. Between the shades assassinations standing still.

The first crystal tears, fall as snowflakes on your body. The first time in years to drench your skin with lover's rosy stain. A chance to find the phoenix for the flame. A chance to die,

But can we dance into the fire, that fatal kiss is all we need. Dance into the fire. To fatal sounds of broken dreams. Dance into the fire. That fatal kiss is all we need. Dance into the fire. When all we see is the view to a kill.

Bond: 6/10
Roger Moore is old... that seems to be the running conclusion with most of these later films, while I think someone like Sean Connery pulled it off a little better, Moore is able to end his run as the famed secret agent in a fairly respectable way. Never my favorite Bond, he managed to at least be fairly consistent in his portrayal of the character.

Main Bond Girl:

Stacey Sutton: 4/10
Stacey has looks and nothing else, on numerous occasions throughout the film I thought I was watching a grownup Hilary Duff! Tanya Roberts is definitely nice to look at but as for acting you’re not getting much. Stacey received Sutton Oil from her father after he died then the company ended up in a large legal battle with Zorin who wanted to take it over. He offered to buy out her shares but she refuses and ultimately gets stuck between Bond and Zorin. Another useless Bond girl with good looks and no brains, what makes her even worse is her constant whining for help from James which gets old pretty quick.

The Villains

Max Zorin: 8/10
A former KGB agent Zorin deserts to start a life of corporate domination, something the KGB doesn't necessarily condone. Zorin was born as an experiment in which a group of mothers within Nazi concentration camps were given steroids in order to produce super-intelligent offspring, most of the children died and the few that lived turned out to be quite mad. Now much older Zorin plans on taking control of the micro chip industry by destroying Silicon Valley and taking over as the leader in the industry. Walken always has a corny wit about him so I was quite surprised when he turned out a good performance as the villain.

May Day: 8/10
Not a bad combination of villains, Grace Jones is pretty much the female version of Dennis Rodman, scary looking and very eccentric. May Day is Zorin's assassin and girlfriend. She is a great fighter and takes a couple stabs at killing Bond. Unfortunately Zorin double crosses her and it ends up becoming part the the downfall of his plans. Grace Jones was the main reason I thought this film was going to be horrible, her character is a little ridiculous but it works, and she compliments Walken's "weirdness" well.
