I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry (2007)

Adam Sandler is the luckiest guy in Hollywood; he's the only actor who can consistently make mediocre to insanely awful comedies that consistently gross over $100 million in the US alone. His films are hated by millions yet they still all flock to pay $20 to see them, only to return exclaiming how crappy it was. The fact of the matter is Adam Sandler could film himself taking a crap and it would become box office gold, and while you walk out of the theater asking yourself why you spent your hard earned money on crap, literally, Sandler would be laughing himself mad all the way to the bank.

So if you haven't guessed by now I didn't think a whole lot of I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry. In fact I'd go as far to say this latest Happy Madison production is by far Sandler's worst work to date, although his next film, You Don't Mess With Zohan, shows high potential of surpassing Chuck And Larry in terms of crapiness. Honestly, I don't even know if Chuck And Larry even has potential, from the get go the films' premise of two best friends pretending to be gay to collect health benefits, is pretty lame and ridiculous, and its attempt at proclaiming some sort of the societal message is quickly lost on the films' outlandish story and horrible acting. What's worse the film wastes Kevin James, a very talented comedian who should be able to get better roles than this, it seems like a sorry excuse to do a buddy film with new found friend Adam Sandler. Honestly, Sandler is quite annoying in most of his films, so it takes a good storyline and some talented co-stars to make many of his films worth watching, and unfortunately James has nothing to work with because the script is so bad. Finally, the inclusion of the beautiful Jessica Biel seemed to be a ploy to lure people into the film via the lingerie shot in the trailer, it's her best scene, not to mention the best scene period.

Overall, Chuck And Larry was quite awful. When the funniest scenes are those starring comedy's crappiest comedian Rob Schneider as a Chinese priest, then you know you’re in trouble. Chuck And Larry is the epitome of the saying "everything worth seeing is in the trailer", because it's definitely the truth, and what's worth seeing is practically Jessica Biel in her underpants. Why she bothered taking this role I'll never understand, after her critically acclaimed reviews in The Illusionist you'd think she'd be getting better scripts! It's quite sad because she's been putting out her worst performances yet. In the end, I can be proud of the fact that I have only paid to see one Adam Sandler film in my life, The Waterboy, which was one of his better films. Sandler will continue to low quality comedies such as this simply because it's easy to do and he's making millions off it, maybe if people stopped paying to see this trash Sandler would actually attempt to make a funny movie again... maybe.

Unfortunately, being in a well-received movie is usually not enough to get good scripts. Biel was merely decent in The Illusionist and only had a small role that didn't require her to do much.

  2. @Castor - well I would disagree because I thought she was more than decent. And being a good film and giving a good performance shouldn't land you in worse roles. Chuck and Larry isn't merely a step down, it's a knock down to the basement level. Only thing I can figure is she got offered a nice hunk of cash.
