The Twilight Zone Season 1: Episode 9 - Perchance to Dream

Edward Hall is a man with a very grave condition, a condition that could at any time end his life.  His only solution to survival is to stay awake, because it's his belief that once he falls asleep he'll never wake up.  But Mr. Hall will quickly discover that there's no escaping the dreams that are out to get him in The Twilight Zone.

Story - 6/10 - Edward Hall has a heart condition and any sudden excitement would ultimately kill him.  What Edward is mostly worried about is his dreams, every-time he goes to sleep he finds himself in a creepy amusement park with a woman named Maya who he believes is trying to kill him.  If he goes to sleep again he's almost certain to never wake up.  Perchance to Dream is the first non Serling script of the series and it's rather noticeable.  While the amusement park scenes are pretty good, the story itself is quite lame and the ending not at all surprising.

Characters - 6/10 - Nothing much special about Edward Hall, but rather the strange beautiful woman in his dreams named Maya nicknamed "the cat girl", is very well cast for the role of Edward's imaginary torturer.  But the torture is pretty corny as going on a roller coaster and in a fun house is supposedly dangerous to Edward's heart condition.

Classic Value - 5/10 - This is not likely to be a very memorable episode for anyone.  The slightly creepy vibe makes the episode watchable but ultimately it's not one of the series best.

Moral of the Story - 6/10 - Dreams can kill.  I guess if you have extremely realistic heart pounding dreams and a existing heart condition you might want to see your doctor!

5.8/10
