Hot Fuzz is one of those films that quells a variety of mixed emotions. While at times it's quite entertaining and humorous it soon becomes very played out and absurd to the point of boredom. Nothing stays "hot" forever and Hot Fuzz slowly begins to cool down to a point that's it's time for a reheat or time to toss it out!
Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is the best cop in London; problem is he's too good. His higher arrest rate and overall arsenal of skills are making the rest of the division look bad, their only solution is to transfer Nicholas. So it's off to Sandford, a town so seemingly crime free that it's won the award for just that countless years in a row. But this town has a dark secret.
Strange occurrences begin happening leading to unseemly deaths which the police chalk up to "accidents", but Nicholas sees them all as much more. Something is going on in this small town, something the city leaders don't want to shed light on and it's connected to these gruesome killings which are anything but accidents. Nicholas quickly discovers Sandford might be his kind of town after all.
Hot Fuzz managed to entertain for the first 90 minutes then completely goes out of control in the final half hour when all sense of order and flow of the film is tossed out the window. What your given is a barrage of senseless violence that's not even well done. I'm a huge fan of action and violence but the finale completely throws off the balance of the rest of the film and almost appears the writers decided to throw a bunch scenes that weren't good enough for the main section of the film and attempt to make an ending.
Fans of Shawn of the Dead will love Hot Fuzz because it's exactly the same film, only spoofs on a different genre. With this in mind, I guess I should not have been too surprised when Shawn of the Dead's same fault, an over the top ending, popped up. In the end, I'm sure plenty of people will disagree with me on this but even they have to admit the last 30 minutes of the film is entirely different than the first 90 minutes. If this had only been about 90 minutes long instead of two hours, maybe then I would have been more receptive to an outlandish ending that appears to be quickly thrown together.
7/10
'Hot Fuzz' is hands down my favorite comedy of all times. When I first saw it, it simply blew me away and I could watch it over and over and over again and it never gets old.
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to list what I liked in it, because I relished it all, from beginning the very explosive end. Even the deleted scene were awesome, especially the "But, he's the supermarket owner!". They should've kept that one.
