The Vampire Lovers (1970)

After a rather horrible experience with what turned out to be The 7 Brothers Meet Dracula, it was a pleasure to finally view a true Hammer horror masterpiece.  Almost every Hammer fan I've ran into ranks The Vampire Lovers somewhere on their top list of all-time Hammer films.  Still entering in I was a little weary that I might once again be the odd man out in a cult film that receives quite a bit of love, but I must say that The Vampire Lovers is the best Hammer film I've witnessed thus far.

  1. Great review, MVP! VAMPIRE LOVERS is one of the best of their 70's output, IMO, although I enjoyed the third Karnstein movie, TWINS OF EVIL a bit more. A lot of fans think of that one as the best of the trilogy.

By the way, I hope you find time at some point to check out the unedited version of GOLDEN VAMPIRES, though. It's a completely different movie. To be fair, Asia has its own history of vampires and undead creatures that's very different from the what Americans are more accustomed to seeing.

  4. venoms5 - I'll probably follow up with the next two films in the trilogy. I know you had the 2nd one on your top 10 worst list, but then again you had a couple others on there I kinda enjoyed. Look forward to the 3rd film too if that's the one everyone says is the best.

I'll eventually check out 7 Golden Vampires, maybe after this month when I've covered more Hammer films I'll go back to it.

  5. I love Karnstein trilogy and Hammer Gothic. 7 Golden vampires was not proper Gothic, though, it was...odd. And boooring!

  6. @Christine - I watched one supposed version of the Golden Vampires, I think it was the US cut the 7 Brothers Meet Dracula... it was horrible. I'm told the Golden Vampires is the better cut but doubt it's THAT much better.
